Sometimes the flames hit 70m high. The heat was unbearable. The horrible sights and sounds will be embedded in the memories of those who witnessed it - the volunteer firefighters. These incredible people sacrificed far more than time away from their family. And unfortunately, lives of both Australian and American firefighters were lost.
